Last night, they had the VES Awards. Which, normally, don’t usually mean a whole lot to me. Usually whichever movie is nominated for Best Picture wins. But this year, we don’t have one of those. So I actually need to look to this for possibly some guidance. Or not. I guess we’ll see how it turns out.
Here is your category for the Oscars: Captain America: The Winter Soldier, Dawn of the Planet of the Apes, Guardians of the Galaxy, Interstellar, X-Men: Days of Future Past.
And here are your winners from the Visual Effects Society Awards:
Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Photoreal/Live-Action Feature Motion Picture
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Guardians of the Galaxy
Interstellar
Maleficent
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
X-Men: Days of Future Past
Winner: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
The important thing to note is that your Oscar category is there. Except for Captain America.
Outstanding Supporting Visual Effects in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Birdman
Divergent
The Grand Budapest Hotel
The Imitation Game
Unbroken
Winner: Birdman
How could Birdman not win?
(I wrote this before they even announced the winner. Because the only thing that changed with the announcement of the winner was the tone with which that sentence would be read.)
Outstanding Animation in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2
Rio 2
The Boxtrolls
The Lego Movie
Winner: Big Hero 6
You’ll find in a minute that will be a trend with them.
Outstanding Virtual Cinematography in a Photoreal/Live Action Motion Media Project
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Edge of Tomorrow (Beach and Paris Attacks)
Interstellar (Tesseract)
X-Men: Days of Future Past (Kitchen Scene)
Winner: X-Men: Days of Future Past (Kitchen Scene)
Well, it was either that or Interstellar. This one seemed the flashier choice.
Outstanding Created Environment in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Triskelion Headquarters)
Interstellar (Tesseract)
Lucy (Times Square)
Noah (Antediluvian Earth)
Winner: Interstellar (Tesseract)
Are we surprised by this?
Outstanding Created Environment in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6 (Into the Portal)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Oasis)
The Book of Life (Magical Land of the Remembered)
The Boxtrolls (Boxtroll Cavern)
Winner: Big Hero 6 (Into the Portal)
So, can we gather that they really like this movie?
Outstanding Effects Simulations in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Captain America: The Winter Soldier (Helicarrier Broadside)
Edge of Tomorrow (Destruction and Sand)
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
X-Men: Days of Future Past (Quicksilver Pentagon Kitchen)
Winner: X-Men: Days of Future Past (Quicksilver Pentagon Kitchen)
Well, I mean, yeah.
Outstanding Effects Simulations in an Animated Feature Motion Picture
Big Hero 6
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (The Battle)
The Boxtrolls
The Lego Movie

Okay.
Outstanding Performance of an Animated Character in a Photoreal/Live Action Feature Motion Picture
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Caesar)
Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (Koba)
Guardians of the Galaxy (Rocket)
Maleficent (Thistlewit)

No shit.

Big Hero 6 (Baymax)
How to Train Your Dragon 2 (Hiccup)
Rio 2 (Gabi)
The Boxtrolls (Archibald Snatcher)
Winner: Big Hero 6 (Baymax)
Again. No shit. If we’re being technical, Hiccup is probably best, but I guess it’s the entirety of the character. In which case… yeah, Baymax.
Outstanding Models in any Motion Media Project
Big Hero 6 (City of San Fransokyo)
The Boxtrolls (Mecha-Drill)
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies (Laketown)
Transformers: Age of Extinction (Knightship)

Edge of Tomorrow (Beach)
Interstellar (Water)
The Hobbit: The Battle of the Five Armies
Winner: Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
So there you go.
I refuse to speculate if this means anything now, since my Visual Effects category article is just around the corner, but I’m sure everyone is gonna jump the gun and read into these results due to the nature of the world and personal preference.
